And with this growth, there is increasing demand for awesome people to fuel this momentum. The bottom line: the opportunity for those looking to get into tech & cybersecurity specifically, is immense. As we start to see light at the end of the tunnel post COVID, more and more employees will be working hybrid, or from, well, anywhere. And this means companies are increasingly under pressure to introduce tools to keep their employees and their company safe from cybersecurity threats, like phishing. Cybersecurity teams are growing, too. In fact, 94% of  cybersecurity teams hired new staff members in 2020, making this an ideal place for graduates to start a career.

    Skills required

    For people that want to get into tech straight from graduation – the main thing employers will be looking for is the ability to learn and adapt quickly to increasingly ambiguous environments. And, while technical skills are important for many roles in cybersecurity, non-technical skills are important, too. In fact, cybersecurity professionals say creativity and collaboration are among the most important skills to thrive in the industry.

    Discipline focused on extracting insights from data. It comprises the processes, tools and techniques of data analysis and management, including the collection, organization, and storage of data

    Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    Being able to communicate both verbally and in writing means that you can effectively articulate messages, information, and ideas to a diversity of people, leading to shared understanding

    Analytical thinking

    Must be able to identify and define problems, extract key information from data and develop workable solutions for the problems identified in order to test and verify the cause of the problem and develop solutions to resolve the problems identified

    Technical skills (think coding, machine learning, or professional skills like accounting/legal)

    Technical skills are the abilities and knowledge needed to perform specific tasks. They are practical, and often relate to mechanical, information technology, mathematical, or scientific tasks. Some examples include knowledge of programming languages, design programs, mechanical equipment, or tools.


    The future of the sector

    The tech industry is driven by people! It’s safe to say that this sector will continue to be frontrunning in its growth and innovation. There will be continued investment from venture capitalists, and skillsets required in tech will continue to grow and adapt at a  lightning fast rate. And most importantly, tech will continue to disrupt traditional ways of doing things, and will need the best and brightest minds to be a part of this.


    Top advice for students

    Tech companies solve real world problems. Look for companies with missions that inspire you. If you can speak passionately about why the company inspires you you’re much more likely to impress off the bat, and be able to progress more through the interview process.
